With the nightclubs closed, DJs have been particularly hard hit by the pandemic. To make up for the lack of regular bookings, many have taken their sound to virtual airwaves through platforms such as Web Radio, Facebook, Instagram, and the new Mixcloud Live. While the idea of live streaming DJ sets isn't new, the unexpected arrival of COVID and blockade has triggered an unprecedented increase in online DJ streaming.
The sight of a person bouncing behind bridges while virtual hearts and comments flow past the screen has become quite well known. The vast majority of DJs, from professionals to part-time players and other enthusiasts, had to be creative and online sets broadcast via social media were a lifeline for DJs and dance music lovers.
This mass move has led to a number of interesting developments in Djing and nightlife that are likely to have a lasting post-COVID impact.
